It will grow and fruit unprotected in Southern Portugal. Grows well in rocky alkaline soil. The underside of the leaves is a silvery white that adds to the overall look of the tree. Beware of the abundant very nasty spines. Produces small fruits about the size of green olives that mature early spring in this location. (2 trees fruiting, planted in the ground at around 130 meters elevation, grown from seed imported from Reunion Island.)
